Uzbekistan Airlines launches first direct Islamabad–Tashkent flight
New flight supports Pakistan–Central Asia cooperation and trade
DUBAI: Islamabad International Airport witnessed a vibrant celebration over the weekend as Uzbekistan Airlines inaugurated its first direct flight from Islamabad to Tashkent.
The debut flight, HY466, departed at 1:09 PM, carrying 126 passengers and marking a major milestone in boosting regional connectivity and strengthening ties between Pakistan and Central Asia.
The check-in process was held at Zone 1 of the terminal, which had been transformed for the occasion with colourful balloons and a festive set-up. The excitement carried through to Stand 3, where airline and airport officials warmly welcomed travellers.
Who attended the ceremony?
The launch ceremony drew notable guests, including the ambassadors of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan. Also present were high-ranking officials such as the Chief Operating Officer of Islamabad Airport, the Managing Director of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), and the Country Manager of Uzbekistan Airlines.
A cake-cutting ceremony at the upper lounge area (A5) added a ceremonial touch to the festivities, celebrating the beginning of what is expected to be a key air route linking the two capitals.
How will the new route help?
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) stated the event was smoothly organised by dedicated airport teams and highlighted the significance of this launch in fostering air connectivity. The new service is anticipated to support trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchange across the region.
Earlier this year, Uzbekistan revealed plans to connect more Pakistani cities, including Karachi, Samarkand, and Bukhara. In a February summit, Pakistan and Uzbekistan committed to expanding bilateral trade to $2 billion, building on a previous $400 million turnover.
The new route not only opens travel options for passengers but also aligns with broader regional cooperation goals.
